Background of the Study

Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) are specialized hospital wards that provide intensive care for critically ill children. Nurses in these units play an essential role in the monitoring, treatment, and overall management of pediatric patients who require specialized care. Their responsibilities include administering medications, performing complex procedures, and providing emotional support to both patients and their families (Chavez et al., 2023).

In Sokoto State, where healthcare infrastructure faces numerous challenges, the quality of care in PICUs can vary greatly. Nurses in PICUs are crucial in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care that can significantly impact the survival and recovery of critically ill children. Despite their pivotal role, the specific contributions and challenges faced by pediatric nurses in Sokoto’s PICUs have not been sufficiently studied, necessitating an examination of their practices, training, and impact on patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

While nurses are central to the functioning of PICUs, their roles in Sokoto State have not been well-documented. The impact of their training, work conditions, and available resources on patient outcomes needs to be explored to improve care and outcomes for critically ill children in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of nurses in the care of critically ill children in PICUs in Sokoto State.
  2. To assess the impact of nursing practices on patient outcomes in pediatric intensive care settings.
  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in delivering pediatric intensive care in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the roles and responsibilities of nurses in PICUs in Sokoto State?
  2. How do nursing practices in the PICU affect patient outcomes in Sokoto State?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in delivering care to critically ill pediatric patients in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Effective nursing practices in the PICU are associated with better patient outcomes in Sokoto State.
  2. Nurses face significant challenges, such as resource shortages and inadequate training, in delivering care in the PICU.
  3. Improving nurse training and PICU resources will enhance patient outcomes in pediatric intensive care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pediatric nurses working in PICUs across Sokoto State. Data will be collected through interviews, surveys, and review of patient outcomes. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting and challenges in obtaining access to multiple PICUs across the state.
